THE REST OF THE STORY

As twelve-year-old Lara prepares to begin the sixth grade this year, her family is more hopeful than ever. Tiffany says that strangely there is a “silver lining” to Lara’s bipolar disorder. “She is very independent and outspoken, but in a good way. She makes friends easily. Teachers adore her! She loves sports and is a competitive gymnast.” While Lara makes friends easily, they often feel her wrath when she becomes upset, and as a result she has damaged relationships. Tiffany said, “Lara’s problems have brought Mark and me closer together as a couple, but if I’m being honest, we are both exhausted and stressed most of the time. We work hard to stay on the same page when it comes to our daughter. I believe everything happens for a reason. I feel blessed that Lara was given to us. We have been able to get her the help she needs. I’m not sure her birth mother would have been able to do that.” I asked Tiffany what advice she would give a mother with a child in a similar situation. “Don’t worry about the diagnosis, focus on the behavior. What are the core behaviors that are a problem? Ask yourself, ‘how can I help the behavior?’”
